Advance practice nurses who attend to the health care of infants and young children have an excellent vantage point from which to identify those mother-child dyads at risk for unhealthy attachment relationships. Using John Bowlby’s attachment theories, and an Infant Mental Health perspective, PNPs will more fully understand the impact of maternal mental illness on the development of healthy attachment and more confidently advocate for “best practice” interventions and services for a dyad at risk.
